Sep 05, 2014

NIPPON STEEL & SUMIKIN BUSSAN CORPORATION (hereinafter referred to as “NSSB”; Head Office: Minato-Ku, Tokyo, President and Representative Director: Ichiro Miyasaka) is launching the latest model of the “xArray” RFID reader system produced by U.S.-based company Impinj, Inc. (hereinafter referred to as “Impinj”) this autumn.

Impinj (Head Office: Seattle, Washington, U.S.A.) is a specialty manufacturer of UHF RFID. Impinj has the No. 1 share in global sales of RFID tag chips, readers/writers.

NSSB, is the exclusive distributor of Impinj products in Japan, and has been selling the “Speedway” RFID readers since August 2009.

In recent years, because RFID has characteristics that enable collective reading, and additional writing/rewriting, RFID has prevailed in a variety of business fields ranging from automotive manufacturing lines, foodstuff factories, storefronts in the apparel industry, and in the logistics industry. In addition to RFID’s principle purpose of business efficiency improvement, demand to use RFID to manage the location of individuals and objects, or the movement thereof, is also on the rise. “xArray” can meet such emerging needs accurately and support customers in building new business models.

Characteristics of “xArray”

“xArray” (Type: IPJ-REV-R680-JP2) is an integrated reader/writer and antenna that has a 2-D array with 52 dual-polarized antenna beams. The antenna always emits radio waves while rotating and can continue to monitor location information and movement records of IC tags over a wide area. The ability to monitor the location information and movement records of IC tags over a wide area had been extremely challenging historically.

Usage of “xArray”

By using “xArray,” traffic lines of workers on manufacturing lines and goods management can be tracked in real time as they are assembled and subsequently monitored more accurately. In addition, merchandise control in storefronts, the automation of operations such as receipt, shipment and inventory, as well as the constant awareness of merchandise display, will become possible. “xArray” can be utilized from the perspective of security and safety in applications such as asset control, and it is expected to expand its range to amusement parks and resort facilities.

NSSB, in addition to the “Speedway” RFID reader, is expanding the range of “xArray” beyond distribution and retailing with a focus on manufacturing, logistics and amusement, and is targeting sales of 1,500 units per year.
